Start with the order of events, because it is the wrong way round
The intuitive story is that a plant makes a chemical, the chemical arrives in an animal, and the animal reacts. That story is backwards. The receptors that respond to cannabis chemistry are not a special adaptation to cannabis. They are part of a signalling system that turns up across the animal kingdom, and it was here first.
How much first is genuinely hard to pin down, so we will not put a fake number on it. What is documented is more striking than a number anyway: components of this system are found in animals as simple as hydra, freshwater animals with a nerve net and no brain, no spine and no head. Whatever this machinery is for, it predates the equipment we usually credit with having experiences.
The plant did not build a door into us.
It grew a key that happened to fit one.
There is a nice wrinkle: insects appear to have lost it. The leading explanation is that they lack the fatty acid the system is built out of. So this is not a story of steady progress toward a better nervous system. It is a story of an old piece of biology that some lineages kept and others let go.
1964
Two chemists, one structure, and a very late start
People had been using this plant for thousands of years before anyone could say what in it was responsible. That sounds like an insult to earlier chemists; it is not. Cannabis resin is a difficult mixture, the active constituent is an oil rather than a tidy crystalline alkaloid, and the legal status of the material made it hard to obtain in a form you could trust.
In 1964, working at the Weizmann Institute in Israel, Yehiel Gaoni and Raphael Mechoulam published the isolation and structure of the active constituent of hashish, the compound we now write as Δ9-THC. Morphine had been isolated from opium in the early 1800s. Cocaine came out of coca leaves in the 1850s. Nicotine was named in the 1820s. Cannabis had to wait until the decade of the Beatles.
Knowing the structure of a molecule tells you its shape. It does not tell you what it touches. That question stayed open for another twenty-four years, and the answer, when it came, was not about the plant.
1988 → 1990
The lock
There were two live theories about how THC worked. One said it simply dissolved into cell membranes and disrupted them, a blunt, non-specific effect, the way a solvent works. The other said it fitted a specific receptor, like a key in a lock. The membrane theory was respectable, and it was wrong.
In 1988, Allyn Howlett's laboratory, with William Devane as first author, determined and characterised a cannabinoid receptor in rat brain. Not a smear across the membrane: a discrete binding site. In 1990 the receptor was cloned, which is the moment a thing stops being an inference and becomes an object you can put in a plasmid and study. A second receptor, CB2, was cloned in 1993.
Cloning a receptor is the difference between knowing a room has a door because of the draught, and holding the door.
And this is where the question turns inside out. A receptor is not built for a plant. Evolution does not equip a mammalian brain with a docking site on the off-chance that a particular flowering plant in Central Asia will one day come along. If there is a lock, there is something the body itself makes to open it.
The receptor was the discovery.
But the receptor was also a question: what is this for?
December 1992
They found it, and they named it bliss
In 1992, Devane, Lumír Hanuš, Aviva Breuer and colleagues reported a substance from brain tissue that binds the cannabinoid receptor. The body makes its own. Working out that it existed took studies in pig brain; a second endogenous ligand, 2-AG, followed a few years later from work on canine gut and elsewhere.
The naming is the part we cannot get over. They could have called it arachidonoylethanolamide, which is what it is, and which is what appears in the chemical literature. What they chose for the everyday name was anandamide, from the Sanskrit ānanda (आनन्द), meaning joy, bliss, delight, plus amide for the chemistry.
Scientists are not generally sentimental about nomenclature. Compounds get named after the plant, the place, the person, or the functional group. This one got named after a state of mind, in a liturgical language, by people describing a molecule their own tissue produces.
The plant is not the origin of the feeling.
The plant is a rhyme.

Everything downstream of the plant in this shop, every gram, every certificate, every price per gram, is a transaction about a molecule that fits a system you were born with, discovered by people who thought the most accurate available word for it was bliss.

A dimmer switch, not a signal
The most useful one-line description of this system is that it is not a messenger so much as a volume control on other messengers. Rather than carrying its own instruction, it largely regulates how much of everything else gets through, dialling neurotransmission down when it is running hot.
That is why the list of things the system is implicated in reads suspiciously like a list of everything: appetite, pain, mood, sleep, memory, immune response, temperature. Not because it does all of those jobs, but because a volume control sits upstream of a lot of jobs. It is regulatory infrastructure.
It also explains a genuinely odd feature of cannabis, which is that people report such different experiences of the same chemical. If a drug delivered a fixed signal, it would deliver roughly the same thing to everyone. If it leans on a control system whose set-point differs from person to person, from day to day, and by dose, then variability is the expected result rather than a puzzle.

What none of this means
This story gets abused, constantly, and usually by people selling something. So here is the part we are contractually obliged to ourselves to write.
It does not mean cannabis is medicine. That a plant compound fits an endogenous receptor tells you the mechanism is specific. It tells you nothing whatsoever about whether it treats any condition, at what dose, with what risks, or better than the alternative. Those are clinical questions and they are answered by trials, not by etymology.
It does not mean cannabis is safe because it is "natural". The system being ancient does not make interference with it harmless. Nicotine fits an endogenous receptor too. So does morphine. "Your body has a receptor for it" is a statement about mechanism and never a safety claim.
It does not mean your body is "deficient" and needs topping up. Endocannabinoid deficiency is a hypothesis under investigation for particular conditions, not an established diagnosis, and it is not a reason for anybody to buy flower. If you see that idea used as a sales argument, you are being sold to.
And the word "bliss" is a naming choice, not a result. Anandamide was named by chemists making a decision about language. It is a lovely decision. It is not evidence of anything.
We think the true version is more interesting than the oversold one anyway. Nobody needs to inflate this. A plant was used for millennia, its active compound was finally pinned down in 1964, chasing its mechanism revealed a regulatory system that we share with animals that have no brain, and one of the molecules involved was named after the Sanskrit word for joy. That is enough. It does not need help.

Because the number should mean something
The rest of this site is a comparison engine. It reads every store we can reach, works out what a gram actually costs once the pack sizes stop lying to you, and puts the cheapest honest option in front of you. That is a narrow job and we like it narrow.
But a price with no context is just a number, and a shop that only ever shows you numbers is quietly telling you that nothing else about this is worth knowing. We do not believe that. The thing being priced here has a hundred-million-year-old lock, a 1964 birthday, a molecule named in Sanskrit, and a legal status that turns on a single decimal place, and none of that is on a product page anywhere.
